Horror Month – June 2015
We spoke to horror icon R. A. Mihailoff who is best known for playing the iconic character of Leatherface in Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. He has also appeared in films such as Drive, Hatchet II & Pumpkinhead II.
“I think that the best villains don’t intentionally set out to be evil per se, if they believe that their cause is just then their actions are justified. Leatherface certainly falls under this category.”
Unequivocally and without reservation, I attribute my inspiration to watching the Universal Horror Classic movies on TV, supplemented with regular and thorough reading of Famous Monsters Of Filmland.
You portrayed Leatherface in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 – how was it working on this movie and portraying this horror icon?
In a word: sublime. It was the combining of my childhood fantasy and my adult ambition. That it was directed by my friend Jeff Burr and had several of my other friends in featured roles made it all the more satisfying.
Were your a fan or the original?
Yes, very much so!
In your opinion is Leatherface a villain or a tragic result of his environment?
I think that the best villains don’t intentionally set out to be evil per se, if they believe that their cause is just then their actions are justified. Leatherface certainly falls under this category.
Who would win in a fight Leatherface, Jason, Freddy or Someone else?
As much as I love Leatherface, it pains me to admit that Jason’s and Freddy’s supernatural powers probably give them the advantage.
You have portrayed many roles over the years which has been your personal favourite? In chronological order: Leatherface (my first starring role and a career changer), Trent Graves in ‘Hatchet 2’ and my role in John Schneider’s soon to be released horror comedy, ‘Smothered‘.
Are you a fan of horror movies yourself?
Yes! (see questions 1& 2)
What is your favourite movie of all time?
Wow…that is tantamount to asking a parent which is their favorite child. I am such a fan of all cinema that it is impossible to pick one single film as my absolute favorite.
Do you have any upcoming projects?
In addition to the above mention ‘Smothered‘, I have two other films ‘in the can’ as they say. ‘S/ash.er’, where I play the patriarch of a family of sadistic serial killers and ‘The Taker’, where I play the host of a paranormal reality show investigating the legend of a supernatural entity called ‘The Taker’.
