GeekedFest is a brand new Film & Comic convention in it’s first year which was held at the Newport Centre, South Wales on August 8th & 9th.
The idea came from some local comic book fans who wanted to see an event in their area and decided to make it happen; headed up by Shane Richard Jordan (owner of the nearby Sin City Comics in Cwmbran) & Chris Muscat.
John Altman (Nick Cotton in Eastenders)
Sarah Louise-Madison (Doctor Who)
John Levene (Doctor Who)
Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones)
Virginia Hey (Mad Max 2/Farscape)
John Challis (Only Fools & Horses)
James Kahn (Novelist of Return of the Jedi, Poltergeist & The Goonies)
Simon Fisher-Becker (Doctor Who)
Matthew Dale (Doctor Who)
There was also an extensive Cosplay area with stage shows, Gaming areas and an Artist Zone.
There were also several cool items being exhibited at the show including:
Made In Wales ‘Dr Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures Exhibition‘
This exhibition featured original, screen-used costumes from the popular television shows including some that were worn by the late Elisabeth Sladen & Freema Agyeman.
There was also photo opportunities to have your photo taken on a full sized replica of the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones, The Simpsons couch and with stars attending the event.
There where many interesting free Q&A sessions at this event with the attendees – such as a film and TV panel. These Q&A’s proved popular with attendees and run by local podcaster Matt Lees.
Highlights from these panels will be available via our YouTube channel, the Gallifrey Stands Podcast (Episode 69 – releasing 12th August) and Get Geeked Podcast. Below is a video of the John Levene Q&A (PG Rating advised John does like to talk frank and colourfully!)
Levene is best known for his role as SGT. Benton of U.N.I.T from Doctor Who. During the course of the weekend we met Levene on several occasions and he was a delight to meet every time. During one occasion he took the time to read the printed version of Whovian Roundup (written by co-editor Lewis) which was available at the Dottie’s Charms stall.
We helped out on this stall over the weekend.
We also thoroughly enjoyed meeting and talking with stars such as Virginia Hey, Matthew Dale and John Challis (videos to follow). Check out Virginia’s range of hand-made soaps & perfumes.
The event was well laid out with plenty of room for all aspects of the event. There was a varied amount of traders at the event selling all varieties of geeky items. All of the Geekedfest staff were extremely helpful and friendly and made everyone feel welcome. The event has proven popular with vast age groups from first time con attendees to con veteran’s.
This is a great event for Newport and we look forward to come back in 2016 !!!
