Once the box office figures began rolling in, it was inevitable that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would become Hollywood’s biggest ever opening but now it’s official – The Force Awakens has become the fastest movie to claim $1 billion worldwide.
Following its $529 million opening weekend achievement – and swift takeover of Jurassic World‘s record – JJ Abrams‘ latest entry to the Star Wars saga managed to hit the $1bn mark after just 12 days of release.
Earlier this year, Jurassic World made it to the same target in 13 days, so it looks like the Force is still strong with this film as it continues to smash records across the board.
The Force Awakens also managed to break US box office records on Christmas Day (December 25) when it took a total of $49.3m on Friday and the record for biggest single day in UK box office history.
The film has been very well received by both critics and fans since its release on December 17 (December 18 in the US) and its success was recently acknowledged when “unprecedented outcry” led to its addition as a late nominee for Best Picture at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.
