Review: The Third Doctor Adventures – Volume 2

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

The Transcendence of Ephros
The planet of Ephros is due to die of natural causes and some of the inhabitants are over the moon about it, as their religion tells them they can use the planets destruction to ascend. Meanwhile the Galactux Power Inc is mining what is left of the planets natural resources. When the Doctor and Jo arrive on the planet and get in broiled in the goings on, could there be more that meets the eye happening here?

This is a good story with lots going on and some great characters. Sometimes Bernard Holley is a little ‘large’ as a character as Karswell but he and the rest of the cast do a great job on the whole in this one.

978-1-78575-750-1The Hidden Realm
When Jo Grants cousins husband goes missing the Doctor takes her Bramfield New Town to investigate. When they find other people have disappeared and reappeared in the past they stumble upon a very insidious alien plot.

It’s hard to say too much about this one as I feel there are some really good surprises along the way, but I want to give a special mention to Richard Earl (DCI Finch) & Alex Lanipekun (DS Joseph) who are great in this.

As a boxset…
These are two stories that for me perfectly capture the time of the 3rd Doctor and, other than audio always having a more expensive visual budget than TV as they don’t have to show anything they describe, this could have been taken from that era. One story I could practically picture the stone quarry and stage set it would have been filmed in; the other having that wonderful country village feel ala the Daemons.

Tim Treloar is perfect as the 3rd Doctor and doesn’t just do a slavish impression (although a very good one) but he acts it perfectly too. Katy Manning is as amazing as always. I would also say this might be a format to look at for the early adventures. I’m sure some people like the style of it, but for me this shows you can have someone else play the Doctor without the need to add a narrator.

I’ll give this one an 8/10 sonics.
