Review – Doctor Who: The Star Men

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

First of all, let’s not overlook this is a title, it’s amazing they haven’t yet used it in Doctor Who.Adric (Matthew Watterhouse) is back with the 5th Doctor (Peter Davison), Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) & Tegan (Janet Fielding) for three new adventures kicked off with this one. The gang from the crowded Tardis era as it seems to be remembered as, (although only as crowded as the Tardis started off) are put up against body snatchers from another dimension with designs on ours; the Star Men.

It’s a good mix of the 5th Doctors era with something a little new. For a start Adric gets a love interest. Always tricky to do and fit into the time it’s set in Who mythology seeing as in those days it was strictly no nooky on the Tardis; but I feel they aptly do it, with a very awkward Adric and love interest in Autumn Trace (Sophie Wu) who is rounded and not just there to flirt with our young Maths wiz.

Indeed the whole piece is very well measured by Alan Barnes with lots of Character and a good Doctor Who tale; and you know with Big Finish and Doctor Who stalwart Barnaby Edwards directing he will get the most out of the actors.

I will admit that this story doesn’t find that 5th gear that some Big Finish stories do, but this is more a comment on Big Finish’s high standards than this story. Big Finish on a bad day is still a cut above and this isn’t a bad day at all.

I loved hearing on the Extras how enthused Matthew Waterhouse is now each time he gets a new script from Big Finish because of the high standard mentioned above and there is also some great stuff from Davison and Fielding

In their usual playful sparing match. Basically this story (and I’m sure we will see this set of 3) captures a particular era of Doctor Who and that in itself is always a gift when done right. It is here. I give this one a solid 7/10 sonics.
