With just less than six weeks go to before the start of principal photography, Paramount has completely shut down the latest iteration of Friday the 13th, multiple sources are reporting.
Platinum Dunes, the production company behind the film, and Breck Eisner who was to have directed the movie has received word earlier in the day (Monday 6th Feb).
No story details were ever confirmed by the studio, but producer Brad Fuller teased in May that this project would give a new origin story for the iconic Jason Voorhees. He later backed away from that statement, claiming they’re creating an ‘alternate reality’ for this iconic horror character.
While this is the first time that Paramount has completely pulled the plug on the project, the studio has delayed the release date numerous times in the past. It had been originally set for release on March 13, 2015, way back in 2013. The reboot was later pushed to November 13, 2015, and then to May 13, 2016, before landing on its new January 13, 2017 release date, and then being shifted again to October 13, 2017.
Paramount has not confirmed that the project is fully canceled, with a studio source close to the project only stating that;
“the production was not ready to go at this date”
It’s possible that Paramount could revive this project at some point in the future, but for now, it seems that Friday the 13th and Jason Voorhees are both dead, for the time being!!!!!
