Review: Doctor Who – The Thief Who Stole Time

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

The 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) & Romana (Lalla Ward) are back for the second part of this adventure started in the The Skin of the Sleek. Romana is stranded and tried to get back to safety, the Doctor tries to make things right and time is running out. How are the Timelords involved in this planet and what is it’s secret? All will be revealedThis story is just as strong as part 1 and whereas part 1 was necessarily a lot of set up; this story pays off big time. The writing by Marc Platt is very strong and he really nails the 4th Doctor’s eccentricity. True I could listen to Tom Baker read the phone book, but when he is written for correctly; as he usually is in Big Finish, it’s electric. Lalla Ward as Romana again plays off Joannah Tincey’s more than meets the eyes Sartia. I don’t want to give the plot away, but they are both given some really meaty stuff to play. Great casting all round by director Ken Bentley that really compiments the writing.

I always enjoy when the Timelords are invoked and the way this plot shines a light on Timelord hypocrisy in the best traditions of Doctor Who on TV is very pleasing (it’s ok to interfere as long as they are the ones doing it).

I’m going to leave this review brief. As it’s the second story in a 2 parter and I don’t want to spoil the plot, but trust me this story is well worth your time and money. For a bit more on the plot please read my review of the first story here…

I give this story a sleek 10/10.
