Review: Doctor Who – Kingdom Of Lies

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

The 5th Doctor, Peter Davison is back with his full Tardis crew of Nyssa (Sarah Sutton), Tegan (Janet Fielding) & Adric (Matthew Waterhouse). This is an almost shakespearian tale. It involves a kingdom divided, a case of mistaken identity (twice) & each side of the Kingdom plotting against the other. Our lead characters get to have so much fun and in true Big Finish style they play the versions of their characters that get to fulfil who they always should have been.

From early on Teagan is paired with Adric, a combo that sparks off each other in a very sibling way. Whereas the 5th Doctor is with Nyssa who I feel he is most comfortable with; but this gives a good backdrop for circumstances to make him feel uncomfortable. This story really shows how when written correctly this larger Tardis crew can feel totally right.

The supporting cast plays off each other nicely too with Johnathan Firth & Charlotte Lucas as the ultimate ‘love gone wrong’ pairing of the Duke & Duchess of Cardenas.

Robert Khan & Tom Salinsky have written a wonderful script, bought to live by Barnaby Edwards directing this perfect cast. Even the title of this is one you feel like they must have used before, but sure enough haven’t!

Where Big Finish has gone so big in some of their adventures and box sets, these more ‘standard’ Doctor Who tales are great reminders of how wonderful a standard Doctor Who Story is. 9/10.
