Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)
As the 7th Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) and Ace (Sophie Aldred) are having a casual chat on the Tardis, Mel (Bonnie Langford) comes in and stuns them; taking the ship. But why? Can our mild mannered computer tech have turned evil? Is she working for Josiah W Dogbolter (Toby Longworth) who is now president of the solar System? And will the Doctor find help in the mostly unlikely of places?Well, you may be able to work out the answers to a lot of these questions, but they sure do come to them in an interesting way. The inclusion of Dogbolter (Who we are reminded in the extras started as a character in the early days of Big Finish in the Maltese Penguin) and Narvin (Sean Carlsen) our favourite CIA operative from the Gallifrey series make this a really nice mix of guest cast with regulars. The story takes us to a lot of places and allows our favourite Who actors to play different roles in parts of this story; much as the kamelion Arc did for David Tennant. Something which is a gift to us and must be for the actors to play something different whilst still being the same characters really. That will make more sense as you listen!
As they always manage to in Big Finish, they have expanded on Mel’s character nicely and made her a lot more rounded than she was given credit for in the TV show and she once again makes use of her computer skills. Ace is the badass as always, but also gets challenged with her more sensitive side. The Doctor is given the chance to be a bit more playful and contemplative than even he usually is. But writer Guy Adams still maintains what is at the heart of these characters. You can also feel the reassuring hand of Jamie Anderson in the casting and direction of the drama. 8/10
