Happy Death Day 2U is a 2019 American sci-fi slasher film written and directed by Christopher Landon. It stars Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Phi Vu, Suraj Sharma, and Ruby Modine.
The film is a direct sequel to 2017’s Happy Death Day, with Jason Blum again serving as a producer through his Blumhouse Productions company.
After the events of the first film, Tree Gelbman (Rothe) unexpectedly re-enters the time loop and becomes determined to escape it after being continuously hunted and killed by a masked assailant, only now her friends are also targets.
Lewis – I really enjoyed the first movie and its concept of merging ‘Groundhog Day‘ with ‘Scream‘! This sequel adds an extra layer to the films mythology and merges ‘Back to the Future‘ (which the film pokes loving fun at). Rothe’s acting in this film is the glue that keeps this film together both in her dramatic and emotional scenes.
As February is Women in Horror Month Rothe AKA Tree is the perfect symbol of a strong woman commanding the attention of audiences! 4/5
Ben – While Happy Death Day doesn’t live up to the title of ‘slasher’ it is a good fun black comedy that also plays on ‘time loop’ comedies; most obviously drawing comparisons to the classic ‘Groundhog Day’.
This sequel builds on the ground-work set by the original but also adds a stronger personal and human story for our Lead character Tree (excellently played by Rothe). The plot can at times be confusing but the comic scenes are a delight as the film pokes fun at it-self and genre tropes. 3/5
Regarding the possibility of a third film, writer and director Christopher Landon has stated that he
“[…] definitely have the third movie in my head”.
while producing studio head Jason Blum has said that
“If enough people see this movie, we’re gonna make a third movie, We want to make a third movie”
The news of a potential sequel comes days after Blum announces plans to create a shared universe for his films
“We would like to do that. We’re thinking about it. I probably should have- It would have been easier had I thought of it earlier, but we’re thinking of doing it – with some of them, anyway. And it’s something that I’d really like to do”.
