The New Mutants is the last of the X-Men movies to be produced by 20th Century Fox to be released, following 2019’s Dark Phoenix. Disney’s purchase of Fox means that the X-Men characters are now able to be used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and those characters may be recast or disregarded entirely in future movies featuring the X-men. Since the acquisition it has been unclear what this would mean for the unreleased ‘The New Mutants’; directed by Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars); which had already faced numerous difficulties on it’s road to release.
The films official accounts have today announced the film will be released in theaters August 28th 2020.
It was thought the film would skip theaters after it temporarily appeared for Digital pre-order. The film; which is loosely based on the comic series of the same name follows five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves. It is believed to be much darker in tone than previous X-Men movies and will have a horror movie feel. The film will also likely be released under the ’20th Century’ banner as Disney recently dropped the ‘FOX’ name from all future releases.
In this current climate of constant changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many other major titles have been taken off the schedule and adjusted in recent weeks including Universal’s Fast & Furious entry Fast 9, Candyman and Minions: The Rise of Gru, MGM’s James Bond follow-up No Time to Die, DC‘s Wonder Woman 1984 and The Batman, Paramount‘s The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run ,Sony‘s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Morbius, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 , Lionsgate’s Spiral and Disney‘s Mulan, Black Widow And MCU Phase 4 installments.
