Purge 5 Release Put On Hold

‘Purge 5’ the latest chapter in Universal Pictures’ dystopian horror franchise, has been indefinitely delayed. The film, titled “The Forever Purge,” was set to release in theaters July 10 and has been pulled indefinitely from the studio’s release slate.

The follows news which broke yesterday that USA Network had cancelled The Purge TV Series which is based on the franchise.

This news is no doubt linked to the wake of mass shuttering of multiplexes due to the Covid19 crisis which means release dates in the future are getting crowded with existing and delayed releases.

Universal has overhauled release plans for most of its upcoming movies. Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island,” a comedy starring Pete Davidson, will debut on digital rental services next month in lieu of a traditional theatrical rollout. Last month, the studio dropped “Trolls World Tour” on video-on-demand and in drive-ins. Meanwhile, “Fast and Furious” installment “F9,” the next “Minions” sequel, and “Sing 2” were all pushed into 2021.

Previously, series creator James DeMonaco hinted that this film would the final entry in the series and the title seems to reflect this.

In October 2018, DeMonaco stated:

“I think it’s a great way to end it all. We want to end it all, I think, in this one, and I’m very excited. When I came up with the idea and pitched it to everybody, they seemed psyched, and I think it will be a really cool ending, how we take this one home.”

The cast includes Leven Rambin (True Detective), Ana de la Reguera (Goliath), Will Patton (Halloween), Cassidy Freeman (Longmire) and Tenoch Huerta (Narcos: Mexico).

Everardo Gout was to direct the film. The film was originally scheduled to be released in the United States on July 10, 2020.

In this current climate of constant changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many other major titles have been taken off the schedule and adjusted in recent weeks including Universal’s Fast & Furious entry Fast 9, Candyman and  Minions: The Rise of Gru, MGM’s James Bond follow-up No Time to DieDC‘s Wonder Woman 1984 and The BatmanParamount‘s The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run ,Sony‘s Ghostbusters: AfterlifeMorbiusVenom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 , Lionsgate’s Spiral and Disney‘s Mulan, Black Widow And MCU Phase 4 installments.
