The Joker is set to return to the big screen on October 4, 2024.
The Joker 2 sequel starring Joaquin Phoenix as the DC villain will be directed by Todd Phillips and we can expect a big media push from Warner Bros. after the 2019 debut of Joker, grossed around $1 billion in box office.
Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in the film won him multiple awards, including an Academy Award for Best Actor, a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, a Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actor, a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.
Phillips wrote the script with Joker co-writer Scott Silver.
Phillips has previously revealed on social media the title of the new project — Joker: Folie à deux — referencing a medical term for an identical or similar mental condition that affects two or more individuals, usually members of the same family.
Lady Gaga is reportedly in negotiations to star alongside Phoenix as Harley Quinn, and it has also reported that the film will be a movie musical – neither of these rumours have been confirmed yet.
Phoenix’s salary, as a result of the first film’s commercial success has increased from $4.5 million to $20 million for the sequel.
The news of Joker 2’s official release date comes just as Warner Bros. are dealing with wide spread controversy for shelving the upcoming Batgirl movie.
