Review: The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield (Vol. 6) – Lost in Translation

Review by Jacob Licklider

Mild spoilers!

The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield is one of those Big Finish ranges which slips under the radar of quite a lot of people. Bernice Summerfield is one of those characters who has a big role in the greater Doctor Who universe, as the companion most associated with the Virgin New Adventures range of novels and the character which gave Big Finish Productions their start. Benny’s own range has been running since 1998 through eleven series of single releases and five box sets before being rebranded in a box set series of ‘New Adventures’; fitting considering where the character came from. The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield has been releasing one box set each year since 2014, with a small hiatus in 2018 to celebrate 20 years of Big Finish by reviving the classic range. 2016’s The Unbound Universe took Benny out of her universe while 2017’s Ruler of the Universe brought the character and the David Warner Doctor, right back into our universe. Now, two volumes later, Big Finish are finally dealing with the fallout in Lost in Translation, as Benny and the Doctor spend a set on the run from the Time Lords who have deemed the Doctor an aberration, unfit to exist. Review: The War Master – Anti-Genesis

Review by Jacob Licklider

The War Master: Anti-Genesis is the fourth, and potentially final, installment in Big Finish’s War Master range starring Derek Jacobi. Unlike the other Big Finish ranges dealing with the Time War, the War Master does not have an overarching plot through each of the four box sets as they are placed around this Master’s personal timeline. Anti-Genesis sets itself apart from the other three box sets, as unlike the previous sets, it is less a standalone War Master release, but a crossover with the Gallifrey range, featuring Sean Carlsen and Pippa Bennett-Warner as Narvin and President Livia, respectively. It is also a plot which reflects on Genesis of the Daleks and that stories implications for the Daleks and Time Lords, while placing the War Master directly in the action. For this review there will be spoilers for each of the stories in the set. As the set was only recently released, a non-spoiler review for those who have not heard it or are wary about spoilers: it is an excellent set. Derek Jacobi as always gives an excellent portrayal of the Master and giving him one scheme throughout instead of other sets giving him a scheme a story helps bring the set into a focus. The overarching plot is engaging and truly feels like a story involving a time war, instead of simply relying on Daleks and Time Lords engaging in traditional warfare. It’s a set that’s worth your time and should be picked up as soon as you can.

Review: The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield – Buried Memories (Vol 5)

Review by Jacob Licklider

The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield is one of the Big Finish ranges which I have been following since its inception, and each set has been a gift to me in the years since. I was greatly disappointed when there wasn’t a set last year, but incredibly excited when it was announced Volume Five would not only feature the David Warner, but a big risk in four completely new writers.

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

I have both been eagerly anticipating this release and also wanting the day never to come that I would know I’d be listening to the last new audio release from Messers Jago (Christopher Benjamin) & Litefoot (Trevor Baxter). Continue reading

Big Finish Review: King Lear

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

King Lear is one of my favourite Shakespeare stories. It’s deceptive in its relatively simple premise. A King with a huge ego asks his daughters to profess their love for him in increasingly over the top ways. 2 of his daughters are all to happy to go along with this to get their share of his kingdom in exchange. The youngest and most beloved daughter knows better and won’t just say how much she loves him, as this knows the words mean nothing when said just to get his things. She gets pushed aside for this, whilst the 2 daughters who did inherit his kingdom start giving him less and less place within it, to the point where he ends up on the street with his fool and he learns what a fool he has been. MILD SPOILERS!

Lisa Bowerman is back once again as the universe’s favourite archaeologist, Bernice Summerfield and as in Vol. 3 she is with David Warner‘s Unbound Doctor trying to save his dying universe. But now the Doctor is President of the Universe and Benny is starting to wonder if that is a good thing or not. Continue reading

Review: The Torchwood Archive

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

The 21st Century is where everything changes and Big Finish are ready.
When Big Finish brought back Torchwood in audio form, it was a stunning success. 1-hour standalone stories that concentrated on a different member of the team. Imaginative, entertaining and totally in keeping in the legacy of the BBC Three classic show.

So when they announced they were going to do a 2-hour special featuring all your favourite Torchwood characters (bar Owen) from both the original TV run and characters they had invented just for the audios for celebrate Torchwood turning 10; I was SO in!978-1-78575-423-4-1 Continue reading
