Review: Short Trips – The Second Oldest Question

Review by Michael Goleniewski

If you are a Whovian at all in the slightest, you most likely know the oldest question in the universe. It’s been tackled and handled in multiple series across the show’s run and is instrumental to the very fabric of what Doctor Who is. But now the query becomes: what about the second oldest question in the universe? That’s what this Short Trip written by Carrie Thompson sets out to tackle further back in the Doctor’s timeline.

Review: Doctor Who – Tartarus

Review by Michael Goleniewski

Tartarus is an unusual Main Range release in that it mixes two different casts together i.e a Doctor Who TARDIS team and the cast of one of Big Finish’s original releases, Cicero. Taking place in ancient Rome, Cicero centers around the tales of the real-life orator, lawyer, statesman, and philosopher who was a prominent player in the latter days of the Roman republic and the early days of the Roman empire. It’s a set that this reviewer has yet to hear at the time of writing but have heard fantastic things about and hope to tackle in the very near future. Thus, bringing these two casts and settings together seems like a novel idea for a great Who story a la ‘Fires of Pompeii’ (or ‘Fires of Vulcan’ from Big Finish’s main line) as well as a nice introduction in getting listeners excited to check out the other set.

Review: Short Trips – A Heart on Both Sides & All Hands On Deck

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

In the latest two short adventures in this range from Big Finish the 8th Doctor in both is reunited with old companions in the shadow of the Time War. If these haven’t been released closed to each other, it’s a funny coincidence & a welcome one as these stories complement each other very well.

A Heart On Both Sides” is read by Sarah Sutton as Nyssa. Since her work at Terminus Nyssa she has become a controller on the hospital ship Traken; which is parked close to Gallifrey in the shadow of the Time War. But the Timelords are not flavour of the month with most, even though Nyssa try’s to stay neutral. So when one of Nyssa’s staff is suspected of being a Time Lord there are questions to be answered, especially when things start going wrong on the ship. Continue reading

Review: Doctor Who – Alien Heart / Dalek Soul

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

I love a little twist on the formatting that Big Finish do and again they have done it with these 2 interlinking stories in one release. Each getting an hour. So you get the pace of a modern 1 hour drama, cliffhangers in the middle and 2 stories that are different but one builds on the other. And in this way you technically get a 4 parter of sorts too

Review: Doctor Who – The Contingency Club

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

I really have to hand it to the writers of the new Big Finish audio’s for really nailing the motives and ‘USP’ behind each character in the new ‘5th Doctor, Nyssa, Tegen & Adric’ series and Phil Mulryne really raises the bar in this respect.978-1-78178-793-9 Continue reading
