Podcasting is a relatively new medium that has it’s roots in the early 2000’s; with the term ‘podcasting’ believed to be coined around 2004. Thanks to pioneers such as Leo Laporte, Adam Carolla, Kevin Smith & Joe Rogan the medium has seen incredible growth in recent years; with thousands of podcasts worldwide covering every conceivable subject matter in many different languages. In 2013, Apple reported over 1 Billion podcast subscriptions on it’s iTunes Store. In 2015, podcaster & comedian Marc Maron interviewed sitting president Barack Obama in his garage. Awareness of the medium has also increased and has been featured in Movies and TV shows such as The Big Bang Theory. However, podcasting is still regarded as ‘new media’.
What’s a Podcast? – A Documentary Film is a brand-new project from 1st time film-maker but long-time podcaster Scott Holden.
“What IS a Podcast? Podcasting is a new digital communications medium that
is not only changing the way people consume media, it is changing peoples lives.
Through my journey, I have met fellow podcasters, and listeners, whom I now call friends. The inspiration and comfort this medium gives to so many is a story that hasn’t yet received the attention it deserves.
This film is not just about my journey. Its the journey of the many podcasters, and listeners, friends and family, and how this medium is changing, helping, and even saving peoples lives, let alone building communities. The world is now at everyone’s fingertips and podcasters are the pioneers of a new digital age and medium.”
You can expect the film to include interviews with podcasters from around the world and from the largest to the smallest shows as well as fans and supporters of the medium.
Independant film legend Robert ‘Bob’ Hawk (Clerks, Chasing Amy) is on-board as Consulting Producer and David Madison(Mr Hush, Middle Village) is signed on as Director of Photography.
The film-makers are currently running and IndieGoGo campaign to help raise $15,000 dollars in additional funding with perks starting at $5 and up. Please give generously and help support indie film.
The film-makers are looking for podcasters and podcast listeners from the UK & US that would like to appear in the film. If you would like to get involved please email bengummery(at)btinternet.com.

The IndieMacUser team Lewis Mainwaring & Benjamin Gummery appeared as featured guests on Episode 56 as part of the ‘Wales Season’……check it out! We had great fun recording this in Cardiff.
Audio clips from our coverage of Cardiff Film & Comic Con March 2015 were also featured on Gallifrey Stands in Episode 49. Featuring an interview with Terry Molloy by resident whovian & co-editor Lewis Mainwaring.
The podcasting medium is now as popular and visible as ever; in-part thanks to big-name podcasters such as Kevin Smith, Adam Carolla, Marc Maron, Leo Laporte & Chris Hardwick. However the majority of podcasts are started in obscurity by people with no previous media/radio experience. So why do people do it?
We talked to a group of podcasters from around the world and asked them what their show is, how they created it and why they do it.
“In poker they say all you need is a chip & a chair to play. Well I learned in podcasting all you need is a laptop & a mic…”
‘Doctor Squee’ (Gallifrey Stands)
“I’ve always believed that podcasting needs the content to attract a listener and then loads of personality, truth and storytelling to keep them listening.”
Jason (7 Days A Geek)
“I love podcasting. I love everything about it. It is such a great medium. It takes work and dedication to build an audience but anyone with passion and motivation can create a successful podcast” –
Scott Holden (ThatmanOnFatman)
